David Brown
|
A hands-on workshop on playing the five string banjo in clawhammer (frailing) style, covering tunings, variations, song or fiddle tune accompaniment or other topics as desired.
The level will be determined by the attendees, but it would be desirable to have a few chords and the basic frailing strum under your belt. Bring your instrument and questions.
David Brown began playing five string banjo at the age of seventeen. Inspired by Pete Seeger and other folk musicians, he started out using the banjo for song accompaniment, but listening to Doc Watson, New Lost City Ramblers, Highwoods, and others drove him deep into the world of fiddle tunes a few years later.
He can be heard playing with the West County Professional Tea Sippers Oldtime String Band (http://www.theteasippers.com/index.html), playing for contra and square dances with "Uncle Dave" (http://www.myspace.com/UncleDaveBand), and in numerous jams around town.
He also is appreciated for collecting & posting a monthly old time music calendar on the Yahoo OldtimeSan Francisco list (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/oldtimeSF).
